Factors affecting depression of college freshmen

Abstract
Mental health of the college students has been an issue in Korea today. The purpose of this study is to examine their level of depression and evaluate the affecting factors of depression in college freshmen with special focus on the impact of self-esteem and self-labeling. To answer the research questions proposed by the study, data of2, 184college freshmen were retrieved from the sixth wave of the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS). Measures included demographic data, self-esteem, self-labeling, parental conflict, parental attachment, and friend attachment. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that predictors of depression were self-esteem, gender, self-labeling, parental conflict, friend attachment, and parental attachment in order of power. The results of this study indicated that self-concept related factors such as self-esteem and self-labeling are major predictors of depression in college freshmen. In conclusion, to keep the mental health of college freshmen, it is essential to develop some measures to ease their self-labeling and to enhance their self-esteem.
